Papers of the King William County Citizens Committee [manuscript], 1956-1957.

The collection contains multiple copies of a "Declaration of Convictions" adopted at the First Annual Convention of the Defenders of State Sovereignty and Individual Liberties," 1957, in response to the "unconstitutional usurpation of power exemplified in the school segregation decision by the United State Supreme Court...a sinister attack upon the fundamental liberties of Americans." With the Declaration are copies of the Certificate of Incorporation and By-Laws of the organization. With these is an open letter, 1956, to "rescue and improve education for our children" advocating the establishment of private schools as a response to enforced public school desegregation; and a press release, 1957, for a brochure by Hamilton A. Long titled "Usurpers--foes of free man." The collection also contains the medal cast as an independent part of the King William County observance of the Jamestown Festival with a forwarding letter on behalf of the clerk of King William County, an explanatory pamphlet and copies of the King William County Declaration regarding the reasons behind the issuing of the medal.
